So, what can you do to make sure your first newborn baby photography lovely?

Know what they love

The first thing you need to do is to ask a lot. You’re not yet a professional and it’s a long way to go to understand what parents generally love. While you can learn from other’s portfolios, it’s always better to get a direct opinion about what they want. You can suggest them to show examples of what they love.

After you know the particular style that they love about baby photography, you can then practice capturing that in your own way. It’s important that when you practice, you prepare more poses and props to use. There will be instances when a baby cannot stay in one position naturally and you have to move on to the next.

Keep the baby safe

A newborn baby is very sensitive to its environment and how it’s treated. If you move him in the wrong way or put him down on the wrong surface, you can induce SIDS, which cause can be pretty obscure. Make sure you do enough reading about safety in newborn baby photography, says a photographer from www.juliaandmia.com.

First, make sure that the room is heated up for the baby’s comfort. You can also use a portable heater that is shot directly to the baby. This is important especially if the baby is naked and when the weather is getting pretty cold outside. Alternatively, heat up the blanket that is going to be used and pile them up together to keep them warm throughout the session. Keep them warm, but not too hot.

Don’t let the baby sleep on its stomach for too long. It’s always better for them to sleep while facing upward, so consider doing poses in that position as well. Babies also sleep better when they’re on their back.

Keep mom entertained

The mother of the newborn is probably tired, but it depends on each mother. Some can be pretty energetic, others may need more time to rest. But either way, there’s always something you can do to keep them happy. If the mother is tired, let her rest and provide something to keep her entertained.

If the mother is energetic and is feeling up to it, you can ask to help you as your assistant in supporting the baby. There are poses that require an adult to keep the head up or to hold the props. Mom can get involved in the fun process and you may even steal some pictures of it!

Natural light is the best

In newborn baby photography, make sure to build a studio that lets a lot of natural light to shine in. If your first job is a lifestyle, choose rooms with wide windows that let natural sunlight in. Newborn pictures are best when you use non-artificial lighting on them. It’s also better for the newborn’s eyes if you don’t use flash on them.
